Six more games to go..who will come out on top?
This season definitely took an interesting twist in the last month. Manchester United were leading 10 points, with a game in hand when things started to get shaky. Liverpool and Chelsea were able to close in the gap, and are now fighting for the trophy. Today’s and yesterday’s games have set a very interesting stage for things to unfold on, with different possible scenarios. One thing is for sure, no team can afford to drop anymore points.
At the current time, here is how things stand:
1. Manchester United: 32 games played, 74 points. (yaay!)
2. Liverpool: 33 games played, 71 points.
3. Chelsea: 33 games played, 68 points.
Last season, I would tell you with this lead, Manchester United has the trophy in the bag. However, the last two months have proved that anything can happen and for Manchester United nothing is guaranteed. A lot can change in six games, and one mistake can be the crucial difference between winning the trophy and coming in second.
Its hard to imagine (as much as I want to) that United will be able to take maximum points in their remaining six games. Not only do we still have to face Arsenal, who were at the top of their game yesterday against Liverpool, we also have to play in Middlesbrough, a place we have struggled in in the past. Last season, United tied to Boro in both the league and the FA cup. In the 2005/06 season, we lost against them 4-1. This season, Middlesbrough are fighting to survive in the league, and with United’s recent anxiety, a loss is not unlikely.
I feel the remaining of the season will be a test of nerves for Manchester United. With recent defeats to Fulham, Liverpool, and Everton, it will take a lot for United to pull themselves together for the task at hand: winning their games for the Champions League against Arsenal and staying on top in the Premiership League.
The boys are tired, their nerves are on an edge, but we’re in the last stretch. Hopefully with Ferguson’s guidance and their fans behind them, they will be able to pull it off and bring it all home!
Inshallah, Manchester United will keep marching on and on..
