The one thing everyone will agree about this the 2010 World Cup are that vuuzelas are damn annoying! It’s true that the idea might have been appealing to people attending the game, but when you have thousands of people blowing into the vuvuzela at the same time its pretty noisy and extremely irritating. It has gotten to the point that some teams have even requested to have them banned during games!

So, why is the vuvuzela annoying? According to Trevor Cox, president of the UK Institute of Acoustics, “The vuvuzela is like a straightened trumpet and is played by blowing a raspberry into the mouthpiece. The player’s lips open and close about 235 times a second, sending puffs of air down the tube, which excite resonance of the air in the conical bore. A single vuvuzela played by a decent trumpeter is reminiscent of a hunting horn – but the sound is less pleasing when played by the average football fan, as the note is imperfect and fluctuates in frequency. It sounds more like an elephant trumpeting. This happens because the player does not keep the airflow and motion of the lips consistent.”

So please, for the sake of my ears and a better World Cup experience, can all the terrible vuvuzela playing stop? Let’s watch a game in peace!

Tomorrow marks the second leg of the highly anticipated derby between Manchester United and Manchester City. This derby is not known to be the friendliest of games, as both teams have much to prove each year, and this season is not very different especially with Tevez’s transfer to City. When the two teams met last September, Man United managed to scrape away with a 4-3 win in a very exciting game. As the season progressed on, both teams have shown off their enormous skills, teamwork, and management, as well as had days where they just couldn’t perform.

Performance wise for each teams’ last five games:

Manchester United scored 9 goals, winning two games, losing two, and drawing once.

Manchester City scored 16 goals, winning four games, and losing one.

Since 1891, United have compiled a record of 64 wins, 49 draws, 42 losses, 230 goals for, and 207 against; a winning percentage of 41.3% compared to City’s 27%.

Game Preview:

It seems that there is a strong change that Rooney, Giggs, and Ferdinand could all miss the game on Saturday. For our midfield, I do not believe that Nani, Scholes, Giggs, and Valencia should start as they certainly lacked luster last game. Maybe Ferguson will opt for putting in Gibson and Carrick in as starters instead. There isn’t lots of options for our team on who will play as I believe we are due for a much needed overhaul. United right now are tired and seem somewhat deflated from their recent games. Manchester City definitely seem to be the in-form team, with many players in top form ready to avenge themselves against United. City have proven a lot this season, and beating United towards the end will be a sweet ending for them.

There is only a few more hours until the game. I have to admit I am still nervous, regardless of whether we have a chance to win the league or not. I am trying to be optimistic, and really hope the boys in red will make us proud, however I feel that the Red Devils won’t be able to get anything more than a tie in this derby.

UPDATE: Final Score: 1-0 United! Scholes scored a goal with a header in stoppage time! The title race is still on! Glory Glory Man Utd!!

I hate the Glazer family.

Manchester United has been in the news a lot lately, and unfortunately its has not all been about the games we’ve been winning. As we can all see, the season has had its ups and downs: not qualifying for the FA Cup, losing more league games by January than in any previous Premier League term, and facing an injury crisis which has caused major concern for the team and its fans. However, the most pressing issue for me right now is our ever increasing debt. Despite turning over more money than ever has been recorded in the English game, United has announced a debt of £716.5m. This is a big problem, especially if we are forced to sell key players to stay out of debt, or start losing them because we can’t match their contract demands. (The scare that happened last week over Rooney’s new contract).

Now you might ask me..why are you complaining over financial aspect of the team when the last four seasons have provided a lot of playing success? Why do you hate the Glazer family so much? One European Cup, three titles, two League Cups and a World Cup Championship have been among United’s achievements. Well, I do not believe that the Glazer family had anything to do with United winning streak. As “investors,” they did not spend any money to support the team! They did the complete opposite! They actually took money out, borrowing £20million in loans and “consultancy fees”.

To understand how United got to where they are now, we have to examine the issue from the very beginning:

Manchester United’s owners, the Glazer family, bought the club in a £790 million debt-financed takeover in May 2005. The family put in £275 million and the rest of the money was borrowed from banks and hedge funds. £275 million was borrowed from investment banks but the rest was borrowed from hedge funds as PIK loans. This meant that instead of repaying interest annually, money is added to the total value of the debt to be repaid in 2017. In the summer of 2006, the club refinanced its debts with JP Morgan, arranging a new ’senior’ debt facility of £500 million.

Because of the way United was bought, in 2009 alone United had to pay £41.9 million in interest. This greatly reduced United’s profitability (£48.2 million before tax in 2009) and meant that without the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80 million, United would have made a significant loss. This is without taking into consideration the the interest on the PIK loans.

This is the reason why Manchester United have issued the sale of bonds to help raise £500 million to finance their debt. So people, for the love of all things RED, go out and buy United merchandise, buy the bonds, or donate to the LUHG fund (Love United Hate Glazer)! This is the time to stand by our team!

Next up..what this debt might do to United..

Now this is a cool development! Sony and FIFA has come together to film 25 World Cup games in 3-D to be aired in seven cities next summer: London, Berlin, Mexico City, Paris, Rio De Janeiro, Rome, and Sydney. It seems that there has been a push to film sports events in 3-D, as Panasonic has similar plans for the Winter Olympics. I think that it is great that companies are exploring the realms of 3-D technology! I, for one, would love to see the end result of this union! I would not mind being in Rome watching a live broadcast of a 3-D football game during the summer!
