Last October, Audi let 120 lucky drivers sample the R8 LMS GT3 race car, and now the company is expanding the program to let paying customers compete in real races. Audi will let participants in the race experience program compete in two R8s entered in six races at the Nürburgring this year, the first of which took place April 24 with the teams finishing fourth and sixth in the GT3 SP9 class. As well as the ‘Ring races, Audi will hold training events at other tracks and facilities to help drivers familiarize themselves with the car and earn the required licenses for racing. It is, as far as we’re aware, the only program of its kind.

Audi’s aim with the race experience program is to let drivers participate in a race series at low cost without a long-term commitment. The drivers will be working with the same factory team that has driven Audis to six victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and customers have the option of driving alongside professional race drivers as opposed to other amateur customers. It sounds like a pretty awesome way to get into racing, and a relatively affordable way to get behind the wheel of a seriously competitive race car.- Source: Car & Driver Magazine
