The End of Fergie’s Reign

7

I think this is a long overdue Man Utd post! Since I wanted to come back with a “bang,” I wanted to see your opinions on whether you think Sir Alex Ferguson should step down from managing Manchester United. I truly believe that Fergie is one of the best managers in Football history. He has been Man Utd’s manager since 1986, and during his reign he was able to lead the team to 11 Premier League Trophies, 5 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 8 Community Shields, 2 Champions Leagues trophies, and wins in numerous other competitions. There is no denying the great caliber of this man.

However, I truly believe that the last year has given us examples on how the game is being handed down to younger managers. I have noticed, even though I would never question his tactics, how Ferguson has adopted a more careful strategy, rather than one that the opposition does not suspect. A clear example was the 2009 Champions League final against Barcelona. Right of the bat, I didn’t believe that the choice of starting team was right for this kind of game. We were going in with a defensive mindset, rather one that was destined to create and score goals. When you have attackers such as Messi, you have to fall back on your offense to score in case your defense slips. Fergie decided to play it safe, and fell short as his tactics did not match the tactics of Guardiola.

Another big issue that I have with Fergie is the lack of players bought this season. Personally, I find that there is a big need for players to score goals on the team! We have the skill to bring the ball up the field, but no one to complete the play! Fergie has failed as manager here because he has failed to attract top notch players to Man United. It is true that recently players’ preferences seemed to have shifted to the Spanish League, but it is part of the manager’s job to make it lucrative for a player to want to transfer in. Even though Ferguson stated that he did not want to pursue any more players for the season, I do believe that we lack more efficient goalscorers. (No one is allowed to quote me on this, but I feel that many of our games this season have been won due to luck more than skill!)

Maybe its old age or a stubborn mind frame that won’t allow him to change his style of managing, but I do believe it is really close to the end of Fergie’s reign. Now won’t it be interesting to see Mourinho in the driver’s seat!

    No Fergie No United

  2. Bu Yousef says:

He couldn’t buy any players for this season… There was no money.

  3. M! says:

There was more then enough money esp with the sale of Ronaldo…

Fergie is not to blame for this years transfer problems… players were asking for too much and players were being very selective with where they want to play. Several of his player choices were out bid by different clubs or turned down by the players.

Ferguson has a different strategy then most other clubs that is dont spend ridiculous amounts of money on players that have already reached their potential, but to find new young talent and mold them to be future superstars.

He is a great coach and no one can say other wise, unlike most he looks to the future and not just winning this season.

It is not the end for Boss

Blekh: We can not say that because sooner or later he will resign, and whoever steps up to the plate has to be able to lead the team

Bu Yousef: The money was there but I don’t think Fergie wanted to splurge too much.

M!: I am not saying he is fully to blame, but I believe part of a manager’s job is to make it attract for players to transfer to your team – whether through financial or motivational (the chance of great success) means. And you are right about Fergie’s strategy, however there were positions that needed to be filled immediately, and could not wait for younger players to mature.
He is a great coach, no one will fill his shoes when he does resign, but I think sometimes some tactics need to be changed.

S E 7 E N: Both you and me know that we are on top right now because of really good luck on some games! (will ignore your female comment) and I do think man utd under Mourinho would be interesting!

D3RT: I don’t want him to step down now, or within the next two years..I just think that a change will be happening..In order to be successful, strategies and tactics need to change and be adapted to how the environment is changing around you..That’s why I believe that it is necessary for a change to happen!

First of all, Sir Alex wasn’t ready to play against Barca in the final due to Fletcher’s absence.. He was relying on him to win the battle in the midfield.

Secondly, 2008/09 season does not mean that Young coaches are better than experienced ones, Barcelona deserved to win because of the brilliant midfielders they have!!! Xavi and Iniesta! Even Fergie admitted that it was hard to tackle them.

In my opinion, any team controls the midfield controls the game.
