If you haven’t yet got the message that direct injection and forced induction is the way forward, then listen up.
Take for example Audi’s TT RS 2.5 litre engine that produces 335bhp…..

The TFSI badging you see on the engine stands for for “turbocharged fuel startified injection” and its the same tech that’s won Le Mans 5 time for Audi.
Anyways, the engine is also relatively light at 183 kg. The vermicular graphite iron used for the block first appeared in large capacity diesels, which have to be strong enough to cope with high compression ratios without leaving the car hopelessly nose-heavy.
Each aluminium piston weighs less than half a kilo, and a strong stroke makes the engine short enough to fit easily across the nose of the TT. The weird firing order of 1-2-4-5-3, in which the next cylinder to fire is alternately adjacent or far apart helps produce the five-cylinder’s distinctive noise, while a balancer shaft keeps it smooth.
Drive Safely!
